To Learn More About the College of EngineeringCORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is uniquely positioned in the heart of South Texas, a region experiencing rapid growth in the oil and natural gas industry. Recognizing the importance of connecting with industry partners and supporting the local workforce, the university has launched the Office of Midstream Research. This initiative is designed to provide students with the tools and opportunities they need to enter and thrive in this essential industry, while also fostering innovation and collaboration between academia and the energy sector.
“The midstream industry plays a critical role in the economic system,” Dr. David Ma, TAMU-CC Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “Establishing this dedicated office strengthens the university’s connections with industry partners, fostering enhanced educational and research opportunities for our students and faculty. This initiative aligns with the university’s mission to serving the community and positively transform lives.”
The midstream industry is a crucial segment of the energy sector responsible for the transportation, storage, and wholesale marketing of oil, natural gas, and refined products. The Port of Corpus Christi is at the epicenter of it all as one of the leaders in the midstream industry. Its imprint in the industry is only going to get bigger thanks to new Harbor Bridge. This new, taller bridge on the Corpus Christi Bay will allow bigger cargo ships to pass through its mighty wingspan and into the heart of that booming business here in South Texas.
“Bigger ships mean bigger opportunities,” Ma said. “The new bridge is a gateway for growth and paves the way for expanded global trade and industrial activity.”
Among the goals of this new office is to work with industry leaders to help fund research and innovative projects. The office will also work with the midstream industry to create internships as well as leadership and communication skills training programs for Islander students, which will ultimately lead to a stronger workforce.
“This initiative underscores TAMU-CC’s commitment to serving its community by aligning academic programs with regional economic priorities,” Ma said. “With this forward-thinking approach, TAMU-CC is not only preparing its students to succeed but also ensuring that the Coastal Bend region continues to thrive as a powerhouse in the global energy landscape.”
Thomas Kalb, an oil and gas executive with 44 years in financial and operating commodity businesses, was named the Director of Midstream Research on Nov. 20. During his career, Kalb was involved in many midstream projects and founded, secured funding, and managed two oil and gas investment companies.
“I am incredibly honored and happy to be working with Dean Ma and playing a part in building a strong bridge between TAMU-CC and the midstream industry,” Kalb said.
Kalb is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Chicago where, respectively, he earned a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering and an MBA specializing in finance.
“Having Tom join our team will dramatically strengthen our connections with the midstream industry,” Ma said. “His leadership philosophy and extensive experience align seamlessly with our mission to prepare industry-ready graduates and push boundaries of engineering research through innovation and close collaborations with our industry partners.”
